How to make an image background transparent

Make a photo, logo or signature background transparent in the browser, save it as PNG or WebP, and check the edges before you use it anywhere.

Open a background remover that runs in your browser, choose Best edges for photos or Flat colour for logos and signatures, and drop the image in. Keep the Background setting on Transparent and save PNG or WebP, because JPG cannot store transparency. Check the edges on dark and light backgrounds before using it.

A transparent background means the pixels around the subject carry no colour at all, so whatever sits behind the image on a slide, a website or a product page shows through. Getting there takes two steps: deciding which pixels are subject, and saving in a format that remembers the rest are empty. Both can be done in the browser, without uploading the picture.

The quick way

  1. Open Remove Image Background.
  2. Choose the model beside the drop zone:
    • Best edges for photographs of people, products, animals and anything with a real-world background.
    • People only for portraits when you want a smaller first download.
    • Flat colour for a logo, a signature, a scan or a product on a plain backdrop. It needs no download and is usually the cleanest choice for flat artwork.
  3. Drop, paste or choose the image. It starts straight away.
  4. Leave Background on Transparent.
  5. On the Size tab, choose PNG or WebP and download.

The result keeps the photo’s own resolution. Up to 20 images can go in at once, and a batch downloads as a ZIP.

Pick the format that keeps the transparency

Transparency is stored in an alpha channel, a fourth value per pixel that says how opaque it is, from fully transparent to fully solid. Values in between are what make a soft edge look natural.

  • PNG stores alpha losslessly. It is the safe default for logos, signatures, stickers and anything you will edit again.
  • WebP also stores alpha and is often much smaller than PNG for photographs. Most current browsers and many web platforms accept it, but some older design and office software does not.
  • JPG has no alpha channel. A cutout saved as JPG gets a solid background, white in FileGizmo. Use JPG only for the final picture once a background has been chosen.
  • Mask only saves the silhouette in white on black, for editing software that takes a matte rather than a transparent image.

A common mistake is to screenshot a transparent image or copy it from a web page. Both usually flatten it onto whatever colour was behind it at the time.

Photos: check the difficult edges

Segmentation models predict which pixels belong to the subject. They are good at people and clearly separated objects, and they make mistakes in predictable places:

  • Hair and fur, especially against a background of a similar colour.
  • Glass, veils and smoke, which are partly see-through and should end up partly transparent.
  • Gaps inside the subject, such as the space inside a mug handle or between an arm and a body.
  • Busy backgrounds with shapes that look like part of the subject.

After the cutout appears, drag the Original slider across the picture to compare it with the photo, and zoom in on those areas. On the Edges tab, Erase removes leftover background and Restore brings back anything that was cut. Feather softens an edge that is too sharp for the photo, Smooth evens out a jagged one, and Despill pulls the old background’s colour, often green from foliage, out of hair.

Look at the result on both a light and a dark background. The Edges tab can switch the preview between a grid, white and black. A pale halo that is invisible on white stands out on black, and the other way round.

Logos, signatures and scans: key out the flat colour

Artwork on a plain background is a different problem from a photograph. The background is one colour, so the question for each pixel is simply how far it is from that colour. Flat colour mode does exactly that:

  • It measures the background from the image’s outer frame, so a mark touching one edge does not confuse it.
  • It sets the dividing line above faint marks that belong to the paper, such as ruled lines or grain, and below the ink or artwork.
  • It keeps anti-aliased edges as partial transparency and takes the paper’s colour back out of them, so a dark logo does not carry a grey rim onto a dark page.

If the background is not flat enough, for example a photo of a signature on a textured desk, it says so and suggests Best edges instead, rather than returning a poor result. When you use a model on an image that does have a flat background, the result says Flat colour may cut it cleaner.

For a scanned signature, scan or photograph it on plain white paper in even light, fill the frame with the paper, and avoid shadows from your hand or the phone.

Where the image goes

Many background removers upload the image to a server to do the work. FileGizmo downloads its model once, from its own site, and then processes the picture inside the browser tab. The result page states whether the page contacted any other site after you added the image, taken from the browser’s own record of requests, and you can confirm it in the Network panel of the developer tools. After the first visit, the model is stored on your device and the tool keeps working without a connection.

Next steps

  • To place the cutout on white or a colour instead, choose it on the Background tab before downloading.
  • For a marketplace, the Size tab has presets such as Amazon main image, Flipkart, Meesho, Etsy, Shopify and eBay. They are common settings, so check the marketplace’s current rules before uploading.
  • To make a logo or signature file smaller afterwards, use Compress Image. Its PNG output keeps transparency and reduces the image to 256 colours, which suits flat artwork better than photographs.

Frequently asked questions

Which file formats keep a transparent background?

PNG and WebP both store an alpha channel, so the transparent area survives. JPG has no alpha channel; saving a cutout as JPG fills the transparent area with a solid colour, which FileGizmo makes white.

Why does my transparent image show a white or grey fringe?

The pixels along the edge were partly the old background. On a new dark backdrop that mix shows as a halo. FileGizmo estimates the subject's own colour along the edge before saving, and the Edges tab has feather, smoothing and despill controls for what remains.

How do I make a logo background transparent without blurry edges?

Use a mode that keys out the flat background colour rather than a photo model. FileGizmo's Flat colour mode measures how far each pixel is from the background and keeps anti-aliased edges as partial transparency, with no download.

Is it safe to make a transparent image of a private photo online?

Most online removers upload the photo. FileGizmo runs the model inside your browser, so the image stays on your device, and the result page shows which other sites, if any, the page contacted after you added it.
