EXIF metadata: what your photos reveal before you share
Learn what EXIF and GPS metadata can reveal about a photo, then remove location data from a JPEG without reducing image quality.

Why a photo can reveal more than its pixels
A photo has at least two layers of information. The first is visible: people, documents, reflections, street signs, screens, and anything else captured by the camera. The second is metadata stored inside the file. For JPEG photos, that metadata commonly uses EXIF, a camera-industry format that can describe how and where an image was made.
Possible fields include the camera or phone manufacturer and model, capture date and time, lens details, exposure settings, image orientation, software used to edit the file, and a GPS directory. GPS data can contain latitude, longitude, altitude, direction, and a timestamp. The CIPA Exif overview specifically describes GPS information as location data recorded in the format.
Not every photo contains every field. A screenshot may have almost none, while a phone photo taken with Camera location access enabled may contain coordinates. The risk depends on the subject: coordinates from a holiday landmark are less sensitive than coordinates from a home, shelter, school, medical appointment, or private workplace.
Read the metadata as a disclosure inventory
Treat each field as context a recipient may not need. GPS latitude and longitude can identify where the shutter was pressed. Capture time can establish when somebody was present. Camera make, model, lens, and software can connect otherwise unrelated images to the same workflow. Orientation and exposure settings are usually mundane, but they still describe how the file was created.
A single field rarely tells a complete story. Risk grows when metadata is combined with visible details, a public profile, a repeated filename, or several photos taken at the same location. Removing EXIF cannot make a revealing photograph anonymous, but it reduces the machine-readable context attached to the pixels.
The reliable method: clean the file you will actually share
Turning off location for future photos does not rewrite existing files. Removing a pin in a gallery interface may also change only the library’s record rather than every exported copy. The safest workflow is to create a cleaned copy, inspect that copy, and share only that copy.
- Open the FileGizmo EXIF Metadata Remover.
- Choose a
.jpgor.jpegphoto. The browser reads it on your device and reports whether it found an EXIF block and a GPS directory. - Select Remove metadata. A dedicated browser worker removes JPEG EXIF APP1 segments.
- Download the cleaned JPEG and give it a distinct name. Keep the original somewhere private if you need its capture details later.
- Share the downloaded copy, not the original file still sitting in the camera roll or source folder.
FileGizmo does not decode and re-encode the photograph during this operation. The compressed JPEG image stream is copied byte for byte while the EXIF block is removed. That matters because repeated JPEG encoding can introduce new artifacts; metadata removal should not require a quality tradeoff.
Remove or suppress location on Apple devices
Apple provides useful controls when you are sharing directly from Photos. On a current iPhone or iPad, open the photo, use the More button, choose Adjust Location, then choose No Location. For a one-time share, open the Share Sheet, choose Options, turn Location off, tap Done, and continue sharing. Apple documents both paths in its location metadata safety guide.
To stop the Camera app collecting location for future shots, go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Camera → Never. This prevents future camera location tags, but it also removes location-based photo search and organization. It does not clean older files.
These operating-system controls are convenient, but a separate cleaned JPEG is easier to reason about when the file will pass through several apps, be attached to email, or be uploaded later by someone else.
Verify the result instead of trusting a success message
Re-open the downloaded copy in a metadata viewer you trust, or run it through FileGizmo again. It should report that no EXIF block was detected. On a desktop, the file’s general creation or modification time may still exist in the computer’s filesystem; that is separate from metadata embedded inside the JPEG and normally is not carried as the same filesystem record when the file is sent through a browser.
Also inspect the visible image. Metadata removal cannot hide a house number, badge, vehicle plate, QR code, computer screen, mirror reflection, or recognizable landscape. Crop, blur, or redact visible details separately.
What this removes and what it does not
The FileGizmo tool removes JPEG EXIF APP1 blocks, including the GPS directory stored there. It does not claim to sanitize every metadata system ever attached to an image. Some workflows add XMP, IPTC, proprietary application segments, cloud-library records, or separate “sidecar” files. A sidecar next to a RAW image is a different file and cannot be cleaned by changing the JPEG.
The tool currently accepts JPEG, not HEIC, PNG, RAW, TIFF, or video. Converting a format merely to remove metadata can change quality, color behavior, animation, or transparency, so format-specific cleaning is preferable.
Finally, do not assume a social platform will protect you. Some services strip metadata during transcoding; others preserve more information, and behavior can change by upload path. Cleaning your own outgoing copy makes privacy independent of the recipient or platform.
A practical sharing checklist
- Duplicate the original and work from the duplicate.
- Remove embedded EXIF/GPS data from the outgoing JPEG.
- Verify the cleaned copy reports no EXIF block.
- Inspect visible clues at full resolution.
- Confirm you attached the cleaned filename.
- Keep the original out of shared folders if its metadata matters.
That process takes less than a minute, preserves the actual photograph, and removes a class of location disclosure that is otherwise easy to miss.

Does removing EXIF metadata reduce image quality?
Not with FileGizmo. It removes the JPEG EXIF APP1 block and copies the compressed image data without decoding or recompressing the pixels.
Does EXIF always contain a precise location?
No. GPS fields appear only when a camera or phone recorded them, but other fields such as capture time and camera model may still be present.
Can someone recover removed GPS data from the cleaned JPEG?
The removed EXIF block is not present in the downloaded copy. Keep the original private because it still contains its original metadata.
Does this method work for HEIC, PNG, RAW, or video files?
The current FileGizmo remover accepts JPEG files and removes JPEG EXIF APP1 data. Other formats store metadata differently and need a format-specific tool.
