What “free” means for each

remove.bg lets anyone remove a background for free, but the free download is a preview of 0.25 megapixels, about 625 by 400 pixels. A full-size result costs a credit. Canva includes its remover only on paid plans. Photoroom has a free plan with a monthly export limit and no commercial use. Adobe Express removes backgrounds free with an Adobe account, within a daily limit it does not publish, on images up to 40 MB.

FileGizmo’s remover is free at the original resolution. The free plan processes batches of 20 photos, and paid plans raise the batch size. Logos and signatures on a plain background can use its Flat colour mode, which needs no model download, and the Size tab has common marketplace sizes such as a 2000 pixel white square for Amazon.

remove.bg is moving into Canva

remove.bg’s FAQ sets out what happens. The standalone site and accounts close at 9:00 CET on 1 December 2026, and unused pay-as-you-go credits expire at that moment. Subscriptions run until then and end on their own; an annual plan is refunded pro rata, and a monthly renewal on or after 1 November is free. The self-service API stops accepting requests, with developers pointed to Leonardo.ai, which Canva also owns; enterprise API contracts continue. The desktop app, the Photoshop plugin and other integrations are discontinued. Export your invoices and usage report before the date, because they cannot be downloaded afterwards. Where the photo goes

remove.bg, Canva, Photoroom and Adobe Express are online editors, so the photo is uploaded to do the work. remove.bg says uploaded images are typically deleted within 60 minutes.

FileGizmo runs the background model on your device. The first run downloads the model, and after that a photo never leaves the browser. That also means speed depends on your device: a recent laptop takes seconds, an older phone takes longer.
