How to blur a face, license plate, or address before posting

Obscure private details locally, choose blur, pixelation, or permanent redaction appropriately, and verify the flattened image before sharing.

Decide whether the image should be shared at all

Editing is not consent. Before hiding a face or plate, ask whether publishing the scene is necessary and whether the people pictured agreed. Cropping the person out may be clearer and safer than placing a conspicuous blur over them.

Google’s current Maps contribution policy tells publishers not to post identifiable people without permission, especially in sensitive locations. It also prohibits private or confidential information such as payment details, medical records, and government identification. The lesson applies beyond Maps: the safest sensitive detail is one that never enters the public copy.

Work on a duplicate. Keep the source somewhere private and use a clearly named export such as street-photo-public.jpg. This prevents the edited version from replacing family, evidence, or project originals.

Inventory every identifying detail

Inspect the whole frame before opening an editor. Do not focus only on the obvious face in the centre.

Zoom into windows, glasses, polished products, phone screens, documents, luggage tags, uniforms, tattoos, and name badges. A small detail that is unreadable in a social feed may become clear after someone downloads the full-resolution image.

Choose blur, pixelation, or permanent redaction

Blur for contextual privacy

Blur blends nearby pixels. It is familiar for faces and moving subjects because the result remains visually soft. YouTube Studio provides both face blur and custom blur for video, while Google uses automated face and plate blurring in Street View workflows.

Use a strong blur that covers beyond the edge of the face, plate, or label. A light cosmetic blur can preserve eyes, character shapes, and high-contrast strokes. If you can still guess the detail, increase the strength or choose a safer effect.

Pixelation for an obvious edited region

Pixelation replaces fine detail with larger colour blocks. It communicates that information was intentionally hidden. Small blocks can preserve character outlines, so strength and coverage still matter.

Pixelation is not a mathematical guarantee of anonymity. Context outside the selected rectangle remains available, and a weak result may expose patterns. Use it for ordinary public copies where the goal is to prevent casual reading, not to protect a secret against a determined attacker.

Permanent redaction for secrets

Permanent redaction replaces selected pixels with an opaque region in the output. Choose it for passwords, card numbers, identification numbers, signatures not meant for reuse, medical data, private addresses, and other content where partial recovery would be serious.

An opaque rectangle should extend past every edge of the sensitive content. Do not use a translucent marker, highlight, or removable vector layer. FileGizmo’s permanent-redaction option bakes replacement pixels into the raster export.

Blur reduces recognition; permanent redaction removes the selected visible pixels from the public copy. Neither operation removes unselected content or external copies of the original.

Apply the effect locally

  1. Open Blur or Pixelate Image.
  2. Choose a copied JPG, PNG, or WebP image.
  3. Add an area and drag or resize it over the private detail.
  4. Choose rectangle or ellipse based on the shape.
  5. Select blur, pixelation, or permanent redaction.
  6. Use a strong setting when blur or pixelation is appropriate.
  7. Add another area for each separate face, plate, address, screen, or reflection.
  8. Process the image and inspect the preview.
  9. Download the flattened result with a public-copy filename.

The image is decoded and edited in a browser worker. Selected regions are mapped to source-image coordinates, so processing applies at the downloaded resolution rather than only to the small on-screen preview. No account or upload queue is involved.

Leave a margin around the private detail. A face selection should include hairline, chin, and both sides. A plate selection should include the full plate, not only the central characters. Text can remain identifiable from one exposed digit or line.

Remove metadata as a separate step

Pixel editing does not prove that metadata is gone. Camera files can carry timestamps, device details, orientation, and sometimes coordinates. Run the public copy through Remove EXIF Metadata when the output format and risk make that appropriate.

Metadata removal does not hide what is visible. A house number, street sign, unique building, event badge, boarding pass, or reflected map can reveal location without GPS. The broader file metadata guide explains why depending on a messaging service to clean a file is unreliable.

If the image shows a bank statement, identity document, or medical record, consider creating a purpose-specific crop containing only the required evidence. Redacting twenty regions is a warning that the source may not belong on a public platform.

Verify the flattened export

Open the downloaded file in a different image viewer. Zoom to at least 100 percent and examine every selected region. Then shrink it to normal feed size and check that no missed face becomes more noticeable in context.

Use this checklist:

  • all faces, plates, addresses, screens, mirrors, and reflections were reviewed;
  • the effect covers the full sensitive region with a margin;
  • high-contrast text cannot be read after zooming;
  • the file opens as a normal JPG, PNG, or WebP image;
  • no editable layer or original image accompanies the post;
  • metadata was checked separately;
  • the caption and surrounding post do not reveal the hidden information;
  • the intended audience and platform privacy settings are correct.

Ask another person to inspect the public copy when the consequences matter. Editors develop tunnel vision and may repeatedly overlook the same background detail.

Know what the edit cannot promise

A blurred face can still be identified from clothing, gait, companions, location, time, tattoos, or the original post. A hidden plate may be known from vehicle records or another frame. Once an unedited copy has been posted or cached, editing a later upload does not retract it everywhere.

For screenshots, crop notifications, browser tabs, account avatars, and taskbars before sharing. For video, use a tool that tracks moving regions frame by frame, such as YouTube Studio’s documented custom or face blur. A still-image rectangle does not protect later frames.

For formal document redaction, use a workflow designed to remove text, annotations, layers, attachments, and metadata from the source document, then verify the output. Is blurring a face enough to protect someone's identity?

It can reduce casual recognition when the blur is strong and covers the full face, but clothing, location, tattoos, context, and modern reconstruction methods may still identify a person.

Should I blur or pixelate a license plate?

Either can obscure a plate for ordinary sharing if the effect is strong and covers every character. Permanent opaque redaction is safer when disclosure could cause serious harm.

Does blurring remove EXIF location data?

No. Blur changes selected pixels. Remove or inspect metadata separately, and remember that visible landmarks, house numbers, reflections, and screens remain part of the image.

Can someone remove the blur from the downloaded image?
