How to compress a PDF to 200KB for SSC or UPSC

Verify the field before chasing 200KB

“Compress PDF to 200KB” is a useful search phrase, not a universal Indian government rule. SSC and UPSC run many examinations, and each form can request different evidence with different limits. One certificate may allow 500 KB while another portal asks for 100 KB. The active notification, corrigendum, and upload-field message are the authority for your application.

Write down the accepted format, maximum bytes, page requirement, colour requirement, and whether the portal wants one combined document or separate files. Confirm whether 200 KB means a maximum for the whole PDF or for each uploaded page. Do this before changing the document, because unnecessary compression can make a readable certificate fail a clarity review.

Choose lossless or strict-target compression

When the PDF is mostly scanned images

Then apply moderate JPEG compression and inspect names, dates, stamps, QR codes, registration numbers, and fine signature strokes.

A clean crop and sensible dimensions usually preserve more legibility than repeatedly running an opaque “maximum compression” button against the finished PDF.

Do not convert a colour document to grayscale unless the authority permits it. A stamp that appears decorative may be part of the evidence being reviewed.

  1. Read the active SSC, UPSC, or other authority’s notice and confirm the exact field limit.
  2. Keep an untouched copy of the original certificate or scan.
  3. Use lossless compression first when selectable text or digital structure must survive.

What not to do

Do not delete pages, crop away headers, or flatten content unless the application explicitly permits it. A smaller file is useless if it omits the reverse side of a certificate, a required instruction page, an issuing seal, or a digital verification element. Do not assume the portal will warn you about unreadable content; technical acceptance is not document approval.

Avoid changing a filename extension without converting the underlying format. Renaming an image .pdf does not create a PDF, and renaming a PDF .jpg does not create a photograph. The browser and portal inspect file structure or MIME type, not only the visible suffix.

Privacy and exam documents

Certificates submitted to exam portals can include names, dates of birth, addresses, category information, signatures, photographs, and identifiers.
