See what your PDF says about you

A PDF carries a small record of where it came from, and almost nobody who makes one is shown it. Export from a word processor and the file usually leaves with a title taken from the first heading, an author name taken from the signed-in account, and the name and version of the software that wrote it. Send that file to a stranger and they can read all of it in a few seconds.

This reads those fields first and shows what is actually there, because the reading is the part that was missing. Several tools here already blank the same fields as a side effect of doing something else, but nothing could tell you what they held before you sent the document.

The fields are the document information dictionary: title, author, subject, keywords, creator, and producer. Editing them rewrites that dictionary and nothing else, so pages, fonts, and images are untouched and the file opens exactly as before. Empty every field in one press if you would rather it said nothing at all, and clear the created and modified timestamps with it.

Setting a timestamp is deliberately not offered. Clearing one removes a fact about you; choosing a new one asserts something untrue about when a document existed, which is a different tool with different uses, and not one that belongs beside a privacy claim.

This is the counterpart to removing EXIF from a photograph, applied to the format people actually attach to job applications and invoices. Both answer the same question: what is in this file that I did not decide to put there. Both run in the tab, on a document that never leaves the device, so the answer costs nothing to check.
