How to fill a PDF form on your phone

Save the form to your phone before editing

Open the email, portal, or message containing the PDF and save a copy into the phone’s Files or Downloads area. Editing a temporary mail preview can make it harder to find the result or can reopen the source after the app is suspended. Rename the source clearly, but do not overwrite it.

On iPhone, the Share menu commonly offers Save to Files. On Android, download controls vary by browser and app, but the result usually appears in Downloads or a selected Drive folder. Organization-managed devices may route files through a required app. Follow that policy for school, government, health, legal, or workplace documents.

Use the phone’s built-in form tools when they already handle the PDF correctly. Apple documents form filling and signing in supported iPhone workflows, while Android apps can offer annotation features. FileGizmo is useful when you want the same browser workflow across iPhone, Android, desktop systems, and tablets, with local processing and explicit crash recovery.

Fill real PDF fields in the browser

Open Fill PDF Form, choose the saved file, and wait while the browser detects AcroForm controls. Supported text fields, checkboxes, dropdowns, and radio groups appear over their real page positions. Tap a field, type or choose the value, then move through the page thumbnails to find fields on later pages.

The PDF and the answers stay in the browser workflow instead of being uploaded to a FileGizmo processing server. There is no account, task counter, or FileGizmo watermark. Device memory remains a practical limit, particularly for image-heavy forms.

Touch targets are designed for a thumb. Pinch to zoom, use two fingers to pan, and long-press for context actions. Avoid zooming the entire browser page while dragging an editor object; use the stage gestures so placement coordinates remain tied to the document.

If you connect a keyboard, Tab moves through controls, arrow keys nudge selected editor objects, Shift plus an arrow makes a larger move, Enter edits supported objects, Delete removes a selected addition, and Escape deselects. Status messages announce page and selection changes.

When the form has no interactive fields

A page can look like a form but contain only an image or fixed drawing commands. Scanners create image pages. Printing a form to PDF often flattens its fields. Some issuers intentionally distribute a visual form meant for handwriting or a specific application.

When FileGizmo finds no AcroForm widgets, it says so. Open Edit PDF and add new text boxes over the blank lines or boxes. This is add-content editing, not field detection. Resize text to fit, zoom in for alignment, and inspect every page after export.

Some PDFs use XFA or unusual controls that a browser library may not support. If another current reader shows fields that FileGizmo does not, use the issuer’s recommended application. Do not convert or flatten a regulated form just to make it editable unless the recipient confirms that the converted copy is acceptable.

Recover work if the mobile browser closes the tab

Phones routinely reclaim memory from background tabs. FileGizmo saves editor state and a source-file fingerprint to IndexedDB on this device about every three seconds and when the page becomes hidden. It does not silently keep the source PDF.

If the tab closes, return to the same tool. Choose Restore, then pick the original PDF again. FileGizmo checks the fingerprint before applying the saved state. You can discard the recovery record instead, clear saved work at any time, and rely on automatic expiry after seven days.

Autosave reduces the risk of losing placement work, but it is not a permanent document archive. Export a checkpoint during a long application and keep the phone charged. Private or incognito browsing may clear storage sooner than a normal session.

Flatten the final form or keep it editable

Choose Flatten when the answers are complete and the recipient only needs to read the result. Flattening writes field appearances into the page and removes interactive controls. It can reduce differences between PDF readers and prevents ordinary field editing, but it is not encryption, redaction, or a digital signature.

Choose Keep editable if another person needs to add answers or the issuer expects interactive fields. The values remain available to anyone who can open the file. For a multi-person form, agree who owns the current copy so two versions do not diverge.

If a visible signature is acceptable, Sign PDF can place a typed, drawn, or uploaded mark. A visible mark does not create a certificate-backed digital signature, verify identity, or provide an audit trail. Use the recipient’s specified service when those properties are required.

Review the download before submitting

Open the exported file from the phone’s Downloads or Files app in a second reader. Confirm the filename, page count, page order, every text answer, checkbox, radio choice, dropdown, date, and signature area. Look for clipped long answers, tiny text, missing characters, and fields that display only while selected.

Keep the untouched source and give the result a descriptive name such as scholarship-form-completed.pdf. If you continue into another FileGizmo tool, the one-time local handoff stays on this device, expires after 24 hours, and can be cleared. Download the final result rather than treating the handoff as storage.

Submit through the channel named by the issuer. After an upload, verify the portal’s filename and preview, then save the confirmation number or receipt. If you email the form, attach the completed copy instead of the source. Open the attachment from the draft once to catch a selection mistake.

Delete sensitive downloads from a shared or borrowed phone after the recipient confirms receipt. Also clear saved editor work. Local processing prevents a FileGizmo server copy, but the finished PDF still exists wherever you save or send it, so ordinary device and account security continue to matter.
