Fill a PDF form privately

Fill an interactive PDF form without uploading the document or the personal information you type into it. FileGizmo detects AcroForm fields, places browser inputs over their actual page locations, and writes the completed values into a new PDF copy.

Text boxes, checkboxes, dropdowns, and radio groups are supported. Multi-page documents use the same local page preview and thumbnail navigation as the rest of the FileGizmo editor system. Keyboard navigation, touch input, undo-aware document state, and local crash recovery remain available.

Not every document that looks like a form contains interactive fields. A scan is usually an image, and a form that someone previously flattened may contain only page graphics. When no AcroForm controls exist, FileGizmo does not invent results. It explains the limitation and links to Edit PDF, where you can place new text boxes over the visible blanks.

Choose Flatten when the form is complete and ready to send. Flattening removes the interactive controls and draws their appearances into the document, which reduces the risk of answers displaying differently in another reader. Choose Keep editable when a recipient needs to continue changing the same fields. Always review the downloaded copy in a separate PDF reader before submitting an important application.

Autosave stores edit state and a file fingerprint on this device, never a silent server copy. If the tab closes, return, choose Restore, and select the same PDF again. Saved state expires after seven days and can be cleared at any time.

Know whether the PDF contains real fields

An interactive PDF form stores named controls separately from the page artwork. A text field may have a maximum length or multiple lines. A checkbox has an on and off state. A dropdown offers defined choices, and a radio group normally permits one selection. FileGizmo reads those AcroForm definitions and places accessible browser controls over the corresponding page positions.

A document can look identical while containing none of that structure. Scans, print-to-PDF copies, and previously flattened forms often contain only pixels or drawing commands. In that case there is nothing for a form detector to activate. FileGizmo reports “no form fields” and offers Edit PDF for placing new text boxes; it does not pretend that optical shapes are real inputs.

If the form should be interactive but no fields appear, open the untouched source in another current reader. A damaged form, unsupported XFA document, password restriction, or unusual widget definition may require the issuing organization’s recommended application. Do not convert a regulated or identity-sensitive form merely to force it through a different workflow.

Decide between flattening and keeping fields editable

Choose Flatten for a final copy that should display consistently and no longer invite routine changes. Flattening writes each field’s current appearance into the PDF page and removes its interactive widget. It can help when a portal or recipient’s viewer otherwise shows blank values, but it also prevents the next person from typing into those controls.

Choose Keep editable when the document is moving through a multi-person workflow, the recipient must add information, or you want to preserve the original field behavior. An editable form can expose the entered values to anyone who opens it, so do not confuse editability with encryption or access control.

Neither choice creates a cryptographic signature, identity proof, submission receipt, or audit trail. If the form requires a certificate-backed signature, an official portal, or a managed e-signature service, follow those instructions. Adding a visible name or mark does not replace the required verification process.
