How to edit a PDF free without Adobe

First decide what “edit a PDF” means

PDF editing is not one feature. Adding a new date, image, signature, highlight, or link is an add-content job. Changing characters already inside a paragraph is existing-text editing. Completing interactive fields is form filling. Permanently removing confidential content is redaction. Converting a scan into editable words requires optical character recognition. Tools that group all five jobs under one button can make a simple comparison confusing.

For ordinary additions, open Edit PDF, choose the document, add the required objects, position them on the real page preview, and export a new copy. FileGizmo supports new text boxes, changes to existing words, PNG and JPG images, vector shapes, freehand ink, region highlights, underlines, strike marks, links, and opaque visual covers. It does not add an output watermark, require an account, or send the document to a FileGizmo processing server.

Keep the original file. The safest editing workflow always produces a separate result that can be compared against the source.

Understand the free-editor limits before uploading anything

Competitor policies change, so these limits were checked against official pages on 13 September 2026. Sejda’s editor page describes a free service of three tasks per hour for documents up to 50 pages and 50 MB, and says files are uploaded and deleted after two hours. Smallpdf says direct editing of existing PDF text requires Pro, which it offers with a seven-day free trial. iLovePDF’s pricing page describes limited processing on its free plan, with limits that differ from tool to tool.

Those facts are more useful than a blanket “free” label. Ask four questions: Does the file leave the device? Is the needed feature included? Is there a task, page, size, or download limit? Does the result contain a watermark? Then follow the vendor’s current plan page rather than relying on an old comparison article.

FileGizmo’s policy is unlimited live-tool use without a daily counter or watermark. Device memory and browser capability are still real limits. A large, image-heavy PDF may need more memory than a phone can provide. The editor virtualizes page thumbnails and initially renders visible previews to reduce that pressure.

Add new text, or change the words already there

Click Add text, type the new wording, choose a supported font and styling, then drag and resize the box. This creates new PDF text. It works well for names, dates, answers, labels, short notes, and visible corrections.

To change words already in the document, choose Edit text and click them. FileGizmo reads the text layer, matches the size, font family, weight, and slant, and paints the patch behind the new words in a colour sampled from the page, so a correction on a tinted row leaves no pale box. Find and replace applies the same change on every page. Two limits matter. A scanned page has no text layer, so run Local OCR first. And the original words are painted over rather than rewritten inside the PDF, so they stay in the file and can still be copied out. The editor warns you when you replace text and offers to export the corrected pages as images, which removes the old words at the cost of those pages no longer being searchable.

If you have the original Word, presentation, spreadsheet, or design file, edit that source and export a new PDF. That preserves layout and accessibility better than patching a finished document. When the source is unavailable, Edit text is the closer fix for a short change. A paragraph that has to reflow is still a job for the original document.

Add images, links, marks, and handwriting carefully

Images are embedded as their own objects. Use a reasonably sized PNG or JPG, place it on the correct page, and avoid stretching it beyond its natural proportions. Shapes and arrows are vector additions, so they remain crisp when zoomed. Freehand ink is useful for review marks; use Sign PDF when you need the dedicated typed, drawn, or uploaded-signature workflow.

Highlights, underlines, and strikethroughs are drawn regions. They work on scans as well as PDFs with selectable text, but they are not semantic text annotations. Zoom in, align the region, and inspect the export. Link regions create clickable URLs; open the download in another reader and test each link because PDF viewers apply different security prompts.

Keyboard users can tab through objects, use arrows to nudge, press Shift with an arrow for a larger move, press Enter to edit supported objects, Delete to remove, and Escape to deselect. Touch controls use large handles, pinch zoom, two-finger pan, and long-press context actions.

Do not mistake a cover for redaction

A filled rectangle changes appearance, not necessarily information. Search, copy and paste, text extraction, object removal, or content-stream inspection can reveal text behind it. FileGizmo therefore calls the object Cover. Redact PDF is the separate tool that removes the text inside each marked region from the file.

For confidential removal, use a dedicated redaction workflow that explicitly destroys text and images inside selected regions. After export, search for the secret, copy all text into a plain-text file, inspect document properties and attachments, and zoom around each redaction. For high-stakes legal, health, financial, or government records, follow the organization’s approved software and review procedure.

Recover a local editing session after a crash

FileGizmo saves object state and a source-file fingerprint to this device about every three seconds. It does not silently retain the source PDF. If the tab closes, return to the tool, choose Restore, and select the same file. The fingerprint must match before the saved objects are applied. Saved work expires after seven days and can be cleared immediately.

That recovery model is useful on mobile, where browsers may reclaim a background tab. It is still sensible to export checkpoints during a long or important job. A local result can be handed once to another FileGizmo tool, such as Compress or Sign, without uploading or manually reselecting it; the temporary handoff expires after 24 hours.

Verify the edited PDF before sending it

Download the result and open it in a separate reader. Confirm the filename, page count, page order, text spelling, image quality, object positions, marks, and links. Check at normal scale and zoomed in. Search for expected text and make sure no cover hides nearby content.

If the source contained a certificate signature, any edit may invalidate its integrity status. If the recipient requires a trusted signature, audit trail, OCR, exact existing-text revision, or certified redaction, use the specified workflow. “Free PDF editor” should describe the job it can do. It should not erase the important differences between those jobs.
