Replace the background on the same page
Background replacement is two jobs: isolate the subject, then make the subject belong in a new scene. FileGizmo’s background remover now does both in the browser, so a transparent PNG is one option rather than the only exit.
- Open Remove Image Background and choose one JPG, PNG, WebP, or AVIF photo with the whole subject visible.
- Select Best edges for products, hair, irregular outlines, and difficult gaps. Fast portraits is a smaller model that helps on a phone.
- Wait while the packaged model processes the pixels in a browser worker.
- Open Refine edges when the result appears.
- Under Background, pick Transparent, Studio white, Soft grey, Gradient, Blur original, or Your image.
- Erase remnants and Restore lost pixels with the new background already visible behind the subject.
- Choose PNG or JPG under Download and export at the source resolution.
Only the first job is automatic. Everything below is the second one.
These controls live in the single-image refine panel. A batch of up to 20 photos still exports transparent PNGs as one ZIP, so a catalogue needing one shared backdrop means repeated single passes or a layout editor.
Choose the replacement style
| Background | What it does | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Transparent | Leaves the alpha channel intact | A cutout you will place elsewhere |
| Studio white, Soft grey | Fills the frame with one colour | Listings and catalogue grids |
| Gradient | Blends two colours along an angle you set | Slides, banners, profile images |
| Blur original | Reblurs the photo’s own background | Call stills and quick portraits |
| Your image | Draws a photo from your device behind the subject | A real replacement scene |
Solid colour takes a picker and a hex field, plus a Pick from screen eyedropper in browsers that support it, which is the fastest way to match a brand colour already on your display. Gradient adds a second colour and an angle. Your image accepts a JPG, PNG, WebP, or AVIF from the device; it stays in the tab, is never uploaded, and is not restored by draft recovery, so keep the file.
Blur original is the honest fallback when no licensed scene is available, because its colours and light come from the same photograph.
Pick a scene that fits the frame
The composition keeps the source dimensions and the subject where the camera put it. You cannot move or scale the subject inside the frame. You can move the background: Fill frame crops it to cover, Fit whole image shows all of it, and Centre, Top, Bottom, Left, or Right decides which part sits behind the subject.
So the scene you choose matters more than any slider afterwards.
| Check | What to compare | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Camera height | Where the horizon crosses the subject | A waist-height camera with an eye-level room |
| Perspective | How parallel lines converge | A wide-angle room behind a telephoto portrait |
| Light direction | Which side of objects is brightest | A face lit from the left, a room lit from the right |
| Light softness | Sharp or gradual shadow edges | Hard noon sunlight against a soft studio portrait |
| Colour temperature | Warm, neutral, or cool light | An orange indoor subject over a blue daylight scene |
| Resolution | Pixels available at final size | A small background stretched behind a sharp portrait |
Use a background you photographed, licensed, commissioned, or obtained under terms that permit your use. A publicly visible image is not automatically free to reuse. Keep its source and licence information with the project.
Match scale, perspective, and ground
Start with the ground relationship. Feet should meet a floor, a product should sit on a surface, and a seated person should align with the ground plane rather than float above it. Because the subject cannot move, use Position to slide the background until its floor line arrives at the subject’s base, and switch between Fill frame and Fit whole image when cropping puts the horizon at the wrong height.
Next, compare familiar sizes. A door, desk, handrail, cup, or paving stone gives viewers a scale reference. If the subject would be two metres tall beside an ordinary door, a different background photo is the fix, not colour correction.
Settle the scene and its geometry before colour. Colour adjustments cannot repair impossible geometry.
Match light, colour, and shadow
Look at the brightest side of the face or object, and replace the background when its main light points the opposite way. Horizontal flipping can help, but only when it does not reverse writing, logos, or a meaningful asymmetric feature.
Despill, under Finish edges, pulls green contamination out of the subject’s own pixels, which is what a leafy or green backdrop leaves in hair and along shoulders. Raise it only until the fringe reads as neutral. For a broader correction, adjust brightness, contrast, and saturation moderately in Edit Image before removal, keeping skin and product colours truthful.
Tick Subject shadow to cast the silhouette onto the new background, then set Horizontal and Vertical offset, Blur, and Opacity. Follow the scene’s light: a room lit from the left throws the shadow to the right. Small offsets, generous blur, and low opacity read as contact; a large hard offset reads as a sticker. The shadow only draws when a background sits behind the subject, so a transparent export never carries one.
That control casts the whole silhouette. It is not a shadow that pools under the feet, so when the picture depends on that pooling, build it as a separate blurred shape in a layer editor.
If the new scene has shallow depth of field, blur the background rather than the cutout. A perfectly clean subject over a noisy low-light room still looks pasted even when the mask is accurate.
Repair the edges against the real background
The refine canvas previews the background you actually selected, which is a better test than a checkerboard. The Grid, White, and Black buttons switch that preview without changing the export: pale contamination from the old wall shows on black, and dark fringes show on white.
Return to Erase and Restore for anything the automatic mask left around hair, sleeves, product handles, or holes. Use small soft strokes, zoom in, and prefer Restore over reprocessing when a thin strap or finger disappeared. Feather and Smooth soften a mask that is technically correct but cuts too cleanly for the scene behind it.
Transparent and reflective objects stay hard. Glass carries the old room inside its reflections, so a clean alpha boundary does not make the object belong in a new one. For a commercial hero image, reshoot the product in the intended setting.
Export for the destination
| Destination | Sensible output | Final check |
|---|---|---|
| Reusable cutout | Transparent, saved as PNG | Alpha channel survives the export |
| Website hero | JPG, or PNG when quality matters | Dimensions, weight, destination support |
| Presentation | PNG or JPG | Text readable, crop intentional |
| Product listing | Marketplace-approved format | Background and content follow the rules |
| High-resolution opaque file | Physical size, colour, bleed, and proof |
A composed download carries a -new-background suffix, so it never overwrites the cutout. Resize once the layout is settled, using Resize Image for exact pixel dimensions, then inspect the file at display size and at 100 percent. Keep the original photo, the background source, and the final export separately.
When a slide editor is still the right tool
PowerPoint, Google Slides, Keynote, and LibreOffice Draw remain the answer when a picture needs more than one subject on one backdrop. Export a transparent PNG and composite there when you need to move or resize the subject inside the frame, change the aspect ratio, place text or a logo between layers, combine several cutouts, or paint a custom ground shadow.
PowerPoint’s documentation supports solid, gradient, pattern, or picture slide backgrounds, and its desktop application exposes background-removal controls that Microsoft says the web version does not match. Google Slides works as a plain layer canvas, which keeps the arrangement reversible.
Do not use replacement to falsify evidence, hide legally required context, or misrepresent a product, property, event, or location. For adjacent decisions, read how to remove a background without credits, how to batch product photos, and the fair Canva background remover comparison.

Frequently asked questions
How can I change a photo background without Photoshop?
Open FileGizmo's background remover, remove the background, then open Refine edges and choose a solid colour, gradient, blurred original, or a photo from your device. The composed image downloads as PNG or JPG at the source resolution without leaving the browser.
What is the best free app for replacing a photo background?
The best choice is often an app already on your device. Apple Preview can remove a simple background, while PowerPoint can remove one and arrange images in layers. FileGizmo does the removal and the replacement on one local page, with a manual Restore and Erase brush.
Why does my replacement background look fake?
Common causes are mismatched light direction, horizon height, camera angle, subject scale, colour temperature, edge halos, and missing contact shadows. The despill and subject-shadow controls help, but they cannot repair a scene photographed from the wrong height or lit from the wrong side.
Should I save a background replacement as PNG or JPG?
Both sit in the Download menu. Use PNG while you still need transparency or repeated editing. Use JPG for a final opaque photograph when a smaller file matters, and note that a JPG export fills the frame with white if the background is still set to Transparent.
