Canva bought remove.bg in 2021, and remove.bg’s standalone site closes on 1 December 2026, with its background removal moving into Canva. Canva includes its Background Remover in its paid plans, so for many former remove.bg users the free path now runs through a subscription they may not need. If the job is a clean cutout rather than a designed graphic, a dedicated remover is the lighter choice.

What each one is good at

Canva is a design suite. The remover is one button inside an editor full of templates, fonts and brand kits, and it is at its best when the cutout goes straight into a post, a slide or an ad. Paying for it only to remove backgrounds is where it makes least sense.

Adobe Express removes backgrounds free with an Adobe account, within a daily limit Adobe does not publish, and puts the result into its own quick-design editor.

Photoroom is built around product photos, with AI backgrounds and shadows. Its free plan limits exports and does not allow commercial use, so sellers usually end up on a paid plan.

FileGizmo does the cutout and the finishing, and nothing else. The model runs in your browser, the download is at the photo’s full resolution, and there are no credits. Where the photo goes

Canva, remove.bg, Photoroom and Adobe Express are online services, so the photo is uploaded for processing. FileGizmo downloads its model once and works on the photo inside the tab. After you add a photo, the result page lists any other site the page contacted, and the browser’s Network panel shows the same thing.

Compare the cutouts yourself

Background removers fail in different places: hair against a similar colour, glass, thin straps, busy backgrounds. Run the two or three hardest photos you actually use through each candidate and check the edges on both white and black.
